Study coaches—what are they and how do they differ
from ordinary tutors?
Study coaches cannot be summed up in one word; they are indeed tutors, but they are so much more. They are their students’ mentor, cheerleader, and friend as well.
- Today's society is such a competitive one in which to live, with demands and expectations put upon students daily. Academic coaches give their students that extra edge to elevate them from the crowd.
Equally important, however, our coaches help them in all aspects—elevating them in areas of self-esteem, motivation, and academics.
COACH SELECTION PROCESS
How are the coaches selected and trained?
All Educational Advantage coaches are hand picked by Owner/Tutoring Director, Deborah Wallack. They are trained by Deborah as well as the Team Director, and they receive a 100+ page coach training manual. Continual training takes place throughout the year. Our coaches are comprised of current graduate or undergraduate students from Butler University, IU, or Purdue, as well as teachers. Coaches are specialists in their area: for example, science coaches will be either science or pharmacy majors, math coaches will be math or science majors, English coaches will be English and Secondary Education-English or Latin majors. This provides the students with coaches who have not had an absence from the subject, but who are immersed in it daily themselves, thereby eliminating the problem of forgetting material which they might once have learned years ago.
Do the directors continue to oversee and stay involved in the student’s sessions?
Each student is given a “behind the scenes” academic team, comprised of the coach, the Assistant Director, and the Tutoring Director. All coaches write and submit an evaluation within 24 hours of their student after EACH session, be it SAT prep or private academic subject tutoring. This evaluation is reviewed by both the Director and the Assistant Director. Evaluations describe not just what the student and coach worked on during the session, but how the students did and if the coach has any concerns or requests for supplemental materials or suggestions.
After reading the evaluations, the Director will make any changes as needed or provide further guidance/direction for the coach to implement with the student. This personalization helps adapt all tutoring/preparation programs to each student’s individual needs.
Tell me more about the quality control measures!
Our unique quality control service is performed in order to prevent any students from simply remaining static. We strive to see progress quickly, and if this does not occur in the regular academic tutoring, an Evaluator is sent in (with the parent’s permission) to work with the student in order to ascertain the problem and provide recommendations and suggestions regarding different techniques for the coach to try. Our staff of coaches varies from 20-50 tutors; therefore, if a different tutoring style is needed, a new coach can easily be provided.
Is there any flexibility in scheduling sessions or getting extra sessions before a test?
Academic coaching/test preparation is designed to work with the convenience of the client. Therefore, locations, times, and days are all chosen to match the client’s needs. If a student has a test/project due before his regularly scheduled tutoring session, their tutoring day can be moved that week (or extra ones added) to accommodate the student’s schedule and needs.
