  • All sessions are tailored to identify and focus on the student’s weaknesses, while simultaneously offering vast amounts of practice in these areas.
  • The program is designed to spend a proportional amount of time on both the verbal and mathematic sections of the test. Due to the nature of private tutoring, however, this can be adapted and personalized to fit the student’s particular needs.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is it necessary to prepare for this exam?
The exam does not test knowledge, but how well one takes standardized tests. There are two very important components to earning a high score: learning the “tricks” and putting them into practice. We often use an analogy to sports in order to make clear our meaning: A prospective tennis player may study and observe how to serve a ball; however, if he neither attempts not practices that serve, he will never be able to do it. The same holds true for the SAT and PSAT. Those who do not prepare for it will not perform nearly as well as those who do prepare. The more one practices, the better he will do.

Why can’t my child just study on his own?
Unfortunately, most adolescents do not have the discipline to force their minds to concentrate on something which they are sure to find dull in the first place. (In fact, many adults also lack this discipline!) Attending structured sessions in which they are required to pay attention and practice the exercises, provides the motivation for students to begin and complete the necessary study program ... and, thus, earn a top score.

Exactly what will my child gain from your program?
Your child will gain a clear understanding of the strategies and techniques essential to performing well on this test. Additionally, he/she will complete the program with a high self-confidence level of his/her abilities in regard to this test as well as test-taking in general, since these techniques also can be applied to other areas. This will eliminate the fear of test-taking that is so prevalent among students and often causes them to “freeze up” and misrepresent their abilities by bringing home low scores. We are also happy to report that we commonly receive feedback from parents that their children actually refer to The Educational Advantage SAT/PSAT sessions as fun!

Why should my child study with you rather than taking a course from a university or from another test prep company?
The Educational Advantage program consists of individual tutoring that is structured and adapted specifically around your child—for a lower price than will be found in a large classroom setting. Working one-on-one with a student allows us to perceive his/her weaknesses and strengths, and thus focus on the appropriate areas. This easily occurs in our group sessions, because those sessions are purposely limited to a maximum of 5 students in order to ensure this private attention. This individual attention cannot be found in a class setting, such as Kaplan or Princeton Review, due to a variety of reasons. First, the instructor must teach a generic course which rapidly moves through a set schedule. Second, if a student has trouble with a particular section, he/she has no one to assist him in working through the problem. The instructor does not have the luxury of slowing down the class to help individual students. Therefore, the student must either figure it out on his/her own or just skip it entirely. Third, the student will not feel obligated to do the practice exercise assigned by the instructor, because he/she realizes that the instructor will never know if he/she did the work or not. In our program, the student knows that the tutor will be personally checking and discussing all practice exercises with him/her; consequently, the motivation to complete the exercises is present—especially upon the realization that the parent will be called to discuss any concerns which may arise! The goal of The Educational Advantage is to teach the student the methods by which to receive the highest grade possible. At the same time, we make sure that the student is constantly receiving positive reinforcement regarding his/her strengths and ability to do remarkably well on the exam. We are pleased that we have built up a reputation that revolves around the accomplishment of this goal, and thus our first priority is to help the student while simultaneously raising his/her self-confidence level to new bounds!
